Marina enhances global collaboration on safety
THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) has joined other nations in a concerted effort to enhance safety investigations related to marine casualties. This collaboration took place at the 2024 International Workshop on the Safety Investigation of Marine Casualty (IWSIMC) in Busan, South Korea, convened under the auspices of the Korea Marine Safety Tribunal (KMST). The workshop was attended by over 100 marine safety investigators, maritime experts and international delegates. Marina’s Enforcement Service Director Ronaldo Bandalaria served as a distinguished resource speaker. The event fostered knowledge sharing, expertise exchange and strategic collaborations to advance maritime safety investigations globally. Key discussions at the IWSIMC centered on critical issues such as ship foundering and fires aboard vessels carrying electric vehicles (EVs). These discussions highlighted the importance of employing rigorous investigative methodologies, including crew interviews and scientific analyses, to formulate effective safety recommendations. Bandalaria’s participation included collaborative site visits with counterparts from the Busan Port Authority and the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology (KIMFT), reinforcing Marina’s commitment to international cooperation in maritime safety practices.
